Addressing the challenges of recruitment and talent developmentWorkforce continues to be an area of challenge for Northeast Ohio employers.
Businesses are seeking skilled workers who are reliable, have on-the-job experience and are committed to growing with the company. At the same time, college students in the region are learning that in today’s competitive market, real-world work experience is crucial to landing a job and advancing their careers.
The second annual Cleveland Internship Summit, presented by the Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) last week at the Embassy Suites in Independence, helped further the conversation around these workforce challenges and provided best practices in recruitment and talent development.

An earlier agreement, reached on August 30, 2016, was rejected by union members in September, requiring a return to the bargaining table this year to resume bargaining for a contract both sides could accept.
The GCP had urged action that would support the efforts of The Cleveland Plan to transform the delivery and expectations of education in Cleveland’s public schools.
“This tentative agreement comes at a critical time when The Cleveland Plan is beginning to reverse decades of decline and deliver measurable improvement,” said GCP President and CEO Joe Roman.
CMSD Superintendent Eric Gordon said in a statement that “throughout the bargaining process, CMSD and CTU maintained the commitment to reaching settlement that is fair to educators and good for the kids.
“I am confident that our thoughtful efforts have resulted in a fair agreement that will not erode the Cleveland Plan reforms that are vital to continuing the progress we have seen in the District.”
After members of the CTU and school board review and ratify the contract, a new deal will go into effect immediately. Full details of the tentative agreement will be released to CTU members and the School Board this week before they are shared with the public.
Once details are available, we will share an assessment of how the agreement furthers the tenants of the Cleveland Plan as supported by the GCP.

Keynote speakerJulian Earls, Ph.D., former director of NASA Glenn Research Center and executive-in-residence, Cleveland State University emphasized the importance of home-grown internships to encourage students from the region to build their careers here.
He encouraged students to use their internship experiences as an opportunity to expand their education, which is "more than classroom and laboratories." He also suggested that through internship experiences, students can discover if their career choice really fits them.
Said Earls: "You will "find out that everything in your work is not that much fun."

The lunch plenary session featured a conversation with Sara Shookman, co-anchor, WKYC Channel 3 and GCP President Joe Roman. Sara shared her intern experiences and how they helped launch her career in broadcast journalism.

Gary Szelagowski, assistant vice president, talent management, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland (photo right), discussed how to ensure your internship program is diverse and how to use your internship programs as a tool for sourcing diverse talent.

Launched by OHTec in 2011, Tech Week is an annual initiative to support, celebrate and engage the local tech community.
The deadline for nominations has been extended to Monday, February 27.
GCP LEAD (Link. Engage. Advocate. Develop.) was created because the GCP recognizes the importance of cultivating our region’s future business and community leaders through the work of the GCP.
The GCP LEAD group will be an exclusive cohort of emerging leaders from member companies with at least five years of professional experience and an interest in getting involved in the areas of economic development, education and workforce, advocacy, diversity and inclusion, and business and physical development.
Members of the cohort will dive into a “GCP immersion experience” by participating in our current work and partnerships. Upon successful completion of the one-year program, GCP LEAD members are encouraged to stay engaged in the organization. GCP staff will work to place them in the areas that best suit their interests and strengths.
- At least five years of professional work experience
- Employed by a GCP-member company
- Have an interest in the work of the GCP

During JA Career Success Day on Friday, February 24, volunteers will spend the day in the classroom using interactive lessons provided by JA to prepare students for success in tomorrow’s workplace.
There are volunteer opportunities from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at these Cleveland Metropolitan School District Academies of Cleveland High Schools: Garrett Morgan, Jane Addams,
Max S. Hayes, Martin Luther King Jr., & Washington Park.
All new volunteers will go through training to prepare for their teaching experience. The snow date is Friday, March 3; please hold both dates on your calendar.
