True2U is a volunteer mentoring program that supports 8th graders in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District as they explore their true selves and make their way along the path to college and career readiness. Now in its fourth year, True2U student participants have shown notable improvement in social competencies and positive values including expressing feelings, resisting negative pressures, standing up for beliefs and serving others in the community.

The third-year report indicates that an increased number of students feel more empowered and valued after participating in True2U. In fact, 96% of students found the information learned in the program to be helpful and in four  of the schools, 100% of their eighth-grade students made high school choices.

In small groups, the youth explore their interests and strengths, set goals, and connect these goals to the opportunities offered by the 35 high schools in the District’s portfolio. The mentors work in teams and have the satisfaction of helping shape—and being shaped by—the next generation of Cleveland’s leaders. Mentors have shared their enjoyment in helping students prepare for future career opportunities.
